Your liver is one of your body’s hardest-working organs, performing hundreds of vital tasks every day. Yet, liver disease often develops quietly without any obvious symptoms. At Bay Area Gastroenterology Associates, LLC, we believe proactive care is the best way to protect your long-term health.
Led by Dr. Jigneshkumar B. Patel, MD, our dedicated team in Trinity, Florida, provides advanced, compassionate care to help you stay ahead of silent conditions like fatty liver disease.
If you are concerned about your liver health, you might wonder how we evaluate this vital organ. Fortunately, we offer a state-of-the-art, completely noninvasive technology called FibroScan® here in our Trinity, Florida office. This quick test helps us assess liver disease with incredible accuracy, completely avoiding the need for invasive procedures.
A FibroScan evaluation is a quick, painless, and noninvasive test that measures liver stiffness and fat buildup. Also known as transient elastography, this technology uses gentle sound waves to assess your liver. During the exam, we pass a handheld wand over your right side, sending painless vibrations through your skin. The device measures how fast these waves travel. Stiffer liver tissue, which indicates scarring (fibrosis), causes the waves to travel faster.
At the same time, the system measures exactly how much fat is in your liver. This dual action gives us a clear, objective picture of your liver health in just 10 to 15 minutes.
Many patients assume that a standard abdominal ultrasound is enough to evaluate their liver. However, a standard ultrasound is only a basic imaging tool. It cannot accurately measure liver stiffness or detect early-stage scarring. According to research published by Graphic Era Hospital, a standard ultrasound can only detect fatty liver when fat constitutes more than 30% of the liver and cannot measure cellular stiffness.
In contrast, a FibroScan provides precise, numeric measurements of both liver stiffness and fat, which allows Dr. Patel to catch progressive liver conditions early, when they are much easier to manage.
We often recommend a FibroScan for patients with risk factors for liver disease, such as type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, or a history of heavy alcohol use. It is also an excellent tool for monitoring existing liver conditions over time. To get the most accurate results, fast for at least three hours before your test.
Eating temporarily increases blood flow to your liver, which can artificially raise your stiffness score. Research in MDPI Diagnostics highlights that acute factors like recent meals or active inflammation can temporarily elevate liver stiffness readings. Fasting can ensure a reliable baseline for your liver.
